Spy Reports
Various reports and rumours about Éowyn and Faramir scenes in the Extended Edition, due out in November. PLEASE keep in mind that I DO NOT know what will be on the extended edition, and all of the information below should be taken for what it's worth, especially as concerns what has made it into the EE. For the most up-to-date information, take a look at the movies board on Emyn Arnen!

Éowyn and Faramir in the Extended Edition

*UPDATE* The Extended Edition is now out! Here's a review from Nausica :)!

HoH: What the reports said is true. At the HoH Aragorn only heals Eowyn, there's no dialogue, just a song (sung by Liv Tyler I believe) and then she wakes up, looks through the window and sees Faramir (that first pic we had with him and the bandaged shoulder). The second scene is the one from the trailer, only they hold hands and hug and that's it.

I would have liked to see more, but those two scenes are very nice and shippy and the acting is quite nice. LOTR is such a big story, it's impossible to have everything.

However, I do hope someone rips the 5 hours film Jedi the White described and puts it on the internet ;).

Here are all the old spy reports I gathered in the months leading up to the EE (in the order of most recent).

According to SEVERAL reliable reviewers...
There will be no wedding scene or kiss for Éowyn and Faramir in the Extended Edition of The Return of the King that comes out this month. Hopefully we can get a glimpse of it in some extra features or in those much-rumoured extended extended editions! Needless to say, I am very disappointed about this report, but the scenes that ARE mentioned in the reviews all sound FANTASTIC.

An Interview with David Wenham in the LotR Fan Club Magazine
In a recent interview with David Wenham in the LotR fan club magazine, that can be read here he said,

I think some fans were slightly disappointed that we didn't see the Houses of Healing in the theatrical version. Well, the Houses of Healing does appear in the extended version. There is a nice little scene between Faramir and Éowyn, which is, I suppose, the coming together of these two characters. I think it is very satisfying for the fans. (10/15/2004)
Slightly disappointed, huh? LOL! It's nice to know that he thinks the fans will be satisfied, let's hope that rings true!

A review of the Extended Edition by Jedi_The_White
According to this review by Jedi the White and further postings on this forum, we can expect the following things from the Extended Edition:

The HOUSE OF HEALING, here is where you Eomer and Aragorn fans are going to really love this film. In the HoH we see wounded being tended to, Aragorn who has a cloak on comes in tends to Éowyn and he and Eomer share a tender moment in that scene. Eomer very concerned over his sister. Using an "ancient remedy" Aragorn is able to heal Éowyn. Then Faramir who is being tended to first by Ioreth an elderly lady, Aragorn then takes over, it's nice scene between Viggo and David wenham, Aragorn holds Faramir's hand and uses the same remedy, Ioreth says "legend says the hands of a king are the hands of a healer." Both Éowyn and Faramir are healed. Then they discover each other, it does take a while for Éowyn to fall for Faramir, Faramir has the starry mantle brought to Éowyn and it fits perfect. Éowyn is who is in fear of things to come is comforted by Faramir as he takes her hand and says "I don't the darkness will endure...soon the darkness will lift." Éowyn then lays her head on Faramir. The HoH scene is truly the spirit of the book.

Will Faramir kiss Éowyn in the House of Healings? Yeah.

Will Éowyn and Faramir's wedding be shown? Yes. Just not huge.(8/09/2004)

I think I can safely say that I cannot possibly wait for December!

A spy report from Comic Con by Shirebound
According to a journal entry made by Shirebound, the EE was previewed at Comic Con, including this scene:

Faramir and Éowyn have a lovely Houses of Healing balcony scene together, apparently where she realizes that she loves him. Faramir tells her, “I do not believe this darkness will endure.” With that, they hold hands, and she lays her head on his shoulder. (7/24/2004)
EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

from a special edition of Entertainment Weekly
A free special LotR editon of Entertainment Weekly was given out at Best Buy with the RotK DVD. In a section entitled "What's on the Extended Cut" the following text can be found (emphasis is mine):

With a total of 300 new F/X shots and 49 minutes of added footage, the extended Return of the King should have enough to satisfy even the hungriest hobbitphile. The release date for the four-disc set is still up in the air, but New Line promises it will be before Christmas. What inquiring minds really want is the early scoop on the extra scenes. Some of the highlights:

1. Gandalf confronts Saruman at the ruins of Isengard
2. Aragorn treats Éowyn in the Houses of Healing after her fight with the Lord of the Nazgul
3. Faramir's attraction to Éowyn begins when he sees her in the Houses of Healing

4. Merry pledges fealty to King Theoden
5. The Lord of the Nazgul faces off against Gandalf during the siege of Minas Tirith and breaks his staff
6. Aragorn uses the palantir to reveal himself to Sauron as Isildur's heir before he goes to Mordor for the final battle
7. The Mouth of Sauron taunts Aragorn and his troops at Mordor's Black Gate, showing them Frodo's mithril shirt.
(thanks to Lalaith and Faith for this!)

from Starlog
An interview with David Wenham shed some light on what HOH scenes that were filmed compare to the book:

Of course Wenham was one of many who lost scenes from Return of the King after Jackson exicsed more than an hour of footage. Some of these scenes might turn up in the Return Extended Edition, or they might not. "There were a few scenes in the Houses of Healing," he reveals, "It's exactly as it was in the book. I think they'll be great for the people who wanted to see what happens between Faramir and Éowyn (Mirando Otto). (June 2004 Issue, added to the site on 05/05/04). Thanks to Cheaza and Nausica for sending this in!
*ahem* SQUEE! Now let's just hope those scenes make it to the Extended Edition!

from TheOneRing.net
A Question and Answer session with a New Line Cinema Vice President of Marketing revealed this little tidbit:

Q: What additional scenes were added?
A: Like The Two Towers extended version, the story of Faramir is shown in greater detail. There are returning characters and new characters, such as Saruman after the flooding of Isengard and the Mouth of Sauron at the Black Gate. Much of the new footage contains extra dialogue and action to further elaborate on each character’s personal journey. (4/29/2004).
There was also a confirmation that there will be no Extended Edition preview on the DVD that comes out May 25, and that the Extended Edition will be released around Christmas 2004.

from TheOneRing.net
An article that contains some pure speculation has this to say about É/F in the EE:

After the battle on the fields Aragorn is the only one who can help the wounded Faramir, Éowyn and Merry and save their lives. Only the healing hands of the king can save them. Afterwards Faramir and Éowyn get closer. (3/11/2004)

from Newsweek
The December 1st issue of Newsweek featured an article about Return of the King that first broke the news of the removal of the É/F romance from the films, but does offer some hope for the scenes being in the EE:

Houses of Healing: In the novel, Éowyn and Faramir convalesce here after battle. Aragorn heals her; she falls harder for him; Faramir falls for her. Jackson shot it, but felt the movie had strayed from Frodo too long. Viggo Mortensen was sad to learn (from Newsweek) the scene was gone. It'll be on the DVD.
(thanks to DeeDee for this!)

Éowyn and Faramir's Wedding
Harry Knowles from Ain't It Cool News (AICN) was invited to be on the set for the last few days of principal photography of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. He wrote daily reports of what he saw and who he met, including this wonderful anecdote:

Next up I find myself watching Faramir and Éowyn being married... Éowyn’s dress is quite literally one of the most beautiful beaded gowns I have ever seen in my life. Miranda is droolalicious here. And that David bloke now gets to flub his kiss about a 1000 times if he is smart at all. I have been volunteering to be the stand in with Miranda... and work out the angles... But noone seems to be taking me seriously... I will say this though... David has been put through the ringer of emotions today.

They shoot the first rehearsal... It’s a double kiss... they come up for air and push on through the emotion... Peter yells "Cut" and they part... All the ladies on set begin protesting that Peter should hold the shot till after they part... when they are smiling into one another’s eyes.

Upon doing a second take like that, Philippa Boyens... who is absolutely delighted to get to this scene tells Peter that it should be a single kiss, and as they come up for air to part... smiling into one another’s eyes... They shoot it like that, but David and Miranda come back for a second kiss as well. But Peter yells cut just as their lips begin to touch... David comes away protesting... he wanted that second kiss... I’m with David, give him that second kiss!!! Or at least give me that second kiss Miranda! Hee hee.

Take 4 --- My fave... Good long kiss, wonderful post-kiss glow. The gals on set are quite pleased. Very happy.

Take 5 --- Peter’s happy...

The ladies on set are delighted to finally... after what seems like years of shooting, they get their 'girly' scene. Philippa is literally coo-ing after every kiss... And I have to admit, it is beautiful on the monitors... But crikey... only 5 takes? David didn't mess up nearly as much as I would have. If memory serves he had to get dragged behind that horse stuck full of arrows about a good dozen times. Life just ain't fair at all. I will weep for the man!
